Book your Hairspray Theatre Break today!

Set in 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, our big heroine with the big hair and big heart, teenager Tracy Turnblad, has a dream: to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show.

As well as being a swinging hit musical with show-stopping 1960s-style dance music, Hairspray is also a social commentary on the injustices of much of American society in the 1960s as Tracy’s heart lets her see beyond the colour of people’s skin at a time when that is all much of America could see!

Interestingly the musical is set in the year that John Howard Griffin’s “Black Like Me” was first published, a commentary on his month of living as a black man in America’s deep south.

mark benton stars as Edna turnblad in hairspray on tour in the UK in 2013The brilliant comic Actor Mark Benton will lead the company as the larger than life Turnblad family matriarch Edna in the show.

The Lion King and Hotel Packages

We have both top price and budget seats for the show and our theatre and hotel breaks include a range of central Edinburgh hotels to suit all budgets. From the two star Travelodge  – with breaks starting at just £98 per person* including bed, breakfast and a ticket for the show, to the five star Sheraton Grand Hotel and Spa where packages start at a mere £172 pp!

But our top pick is the 4 star Carlton Hotel on North Bridge in the centre of Edinburgh. Situated at the East end of Edinburgh’s main shopping street, Princes Street, it is also just a few minutes walk from the Playhouse Theatre and with breaks starting at just £107.50 per person it is a great deal for a central four star hotel.

Actually, if the truth be told, thanks to the compact nature of Edinburgh centre, most of our hotels are within walking distance of most of Edinburgh!  The Royal Mile, the Castle, Grassmarket and Holyrood Palace. And if you don’t fancy the walk the buses are great too (although don’t ask the locals about the tram system!)
